A Lesson From Ayrton Senna On Greatness and Mastery

There was so much to take away from watching the documentary Senna about the late auto-racing great, Ayrton Senna da Silva. Just the racing scenes were worth the time.

Senna lived an amazing life.

He won three Formula-1 World Championships. Earned hundreds of millions. Gained the adoration of fans, professionals, women, and his home nation of Brazil.

He just about had it all. . .

But that wasn’t enough for him to feel whole

In 1992, after he had attained mountains of worldly success, he still spoke of feeling dissatisfied, incomplete, and struggling. He explained that what mattered was improving himself. Striving for greatness. Making Progress. Gaining mastery.

That’s what made him feel complete and more content.

Interestingly, this is the privilege that fitness provides. You can wake up each day and try to get better. There are so many things you can work at or improve on, whether it be your diet, physical performance, exercise technique, mindset, or character. We’ll never be done, but the process can be extremely satisfying and fulfilling.

Stop and ask yourself…

Where in your fitness program (or life) do you derive joy from improving yourself and gaining mastery? What obstacles do you allow to get in your way? How can you carve out the time and energy to make things happen? What’s the next incremental step you could take? What thoughts and attitude would foster your better progress?

Until next time…

Believe. Commit. Motivate. Push.
